I’m essentially a slob at heart although I’ve come to the conclusion that 5 slobs cannot co-exist under the same roof, so I have spells of clutter-anxiety-induced neatnik bouts. Before I went back to work fulltime, I seemed to have things under control, but I’ve relaxed the reins and now I feel like a new bout is going to hit. It will be a total sucker punch for my family who is boycotting the blog because they don’t like that I moved. Good. That means I’ll talk about them here. Bahaha.
Anyway, I have discovered that if I make my bed first thing in the morning, the rest of the day seems organized. I said “seemed” okay? I am well aware of things like self-fulfilling prophecy and all that psycho-babble.
Still, it works for me. Look, it’s not even 6:30 and after making my bed I have almost finished a blog entry. See? It works. I might just finish grading papers today.
Do you make your bed?
We only make our bed about once or twice a week. My wife is so OCD about the rest of the house, especially the kitchen, that I’m more than willing to let the bed go if she is. Besides, if on the weekend I feel a need for a short nap, I don’t feel as guilty about “messing up the bed.”
I normally don’t make the bed because someone is still in it when I wake up. But around our house our aim is to make the beds shortly after waking up. Sometimes the boys are reluctant but other times they surprise us.
In our house that is just part of how we start our day.
Really can’t picture a time that making up a bed would matter to me, or that I’d bother with it. The Mrs, however, has to straighten it up as part of the “going to bed” ritual.
When I’m the last one out it’s automatic- back from the shower make the bed. It makes me feel completed with sleeping, ready to go into the mode of being up some how. Also an unmade bed in the evening doesn’t seem as inviting. It’s weird, it’s OCD, its me.
For me it usually depends on whether I am up in plenty of time to do it, or I have to rush off to work! It doesn’t really bother me, but my wife won’t go to bed at night without the bed being made, so some nights we are making the bed before getting in it!
I like making the bed before leaving the house or starting the morning routine(not that that’s always the case!). I’m “trying” to instill this on my kids. That means that Luly (7) has taken up sleeping ON her quilt so that all she has to do in the morning is straighten it out and fold her blanket. I tried fighting it at first, but decided to let it go. She’s a genius! 🙂
