WPC: Ornate

This week’s challenge, to capture something ornate, breathtakingly extravagant, threw me a little. I originally thought I could go for some of the beautiful pieces from churches and cathedrals, or the historic places I’ve been to recently.

But then I thought, real complexity is in nature. Intricate shapes and complex patterns are everywhere. God’s palate is much more complex and rich than any man-made structure. So here’s one beauty — a favorite because there are so many patterns everywhere.

Happy Birthday Dominicans Everywhere!

sealI have a soft spot for the Dominicans.

I met my husband through the St. Dominic Church youth group when I was in high school.

Two Dominican Saints, St. Catherine of Siena and St. Rose of Lima, are featured in my book.

Another Dominican Saint, whose feast day was last week, St. Martin de Porres, was a favorite of my grandfather Alejandro.

I’m devoted to the Rosary, which is associated with St. Dominic!

I’m so happy for the milestone — a Jubilee Year celebrating 800 years of the Order of Preachers. Congratulations to Dominicans everywhere! God bless you!

3 Things on Thursday

Oh my goodness. The unintentional alliteration has pleased me so much! Three things on Thursday. I’m cracking up.

Anyway…I’m meditating on the Luminous mysteries, a favorite of mine that played an integral part in my faith journey, and I was thinking about ways I could be the Light of Christ in the world today.

What three little things could I do today to shine that Light?

  1. Smile — I talk to a lot of people. Some of them are stressed and already feeling like I’m not going to have good news for them.
  2. Listen — Those same people often feel they have no voice.
  3. Pray — I’ve been a slacker in that department, making excuses or poor choices instead of saying my prayers.

What three things could you do to shine Christ’s light?
